Inter will aim to get back to winning ways when they face Empoli at the San Siro tomorrow night.
Inter’s near-perfect season dealt a halt as they failed to find a win in each of their previous two matches across all competitions. Simone Inzaghi’s hopes of leading his club to yet another Champions League final were squashed after Atletico Madrid’s resurrection in the second leg of the quarter-finals at the Civitas Metropolitano Stadium. Goals from Antoine Griezmann and Memphis Depay forced the game into extra-time and subsequently the clash was settled on penalties. Alexis Sanchez, Davy Klassen and Lautaro Martinez all missed their chances and were knocked out of European competition for this season. The draw with Napoli might have delayed their Scudetto-winning celebrations but they still have a firm grip on the league title. The Nerazzurri are the favourites for tomorrow’s clash and they will look to prevail.
Meanwhile, Empoli approach this match after a 1-0 defeat to Bologna as they had their hearts broken when Giovanni Fabbian slotted in the winner in added time. It has been a disastrous season in terms of the club’s attacking department as the Gli Azzurri have only managed to score 22 goals throughout the campaign. This is the lowest tally in the Italian first division and they have gone without scoring in their last three games. Currently sitting in 17th-place in the league standings, Empoli are level on points with 18th-placed Frosinone and only two points clear of relegation-threatened Sassuolo. However, Davide Nicola’s team could exchange places with either of the two sides soon if they fail to find a victory in the upcoming matches. It will be considered an upset if they come away with a point against Inter.
