Zurich is the world’s number one smart city, followed by Oslo and Canberra. In Italy, the most innovative are Bologna (51st), Milan (82nd) and Rome (122nd)
Smart cities are the future of global urbanization. Technology is transforming cities into intelligent centers thanks to innovative systems and solutions that improve the quality of life and energy efficiency and that revolutionize the way we live and interact with the urban environment. But which are the smartest cities in the world?

LIVE energy answers this question through the infographic “Smart city, what are the smartest cities in the world?”, which reports virtuous examples of technologically advanced urban centres.

According to the data collected, the smartest city in the world is Zurich (Switzerland) thanks to innovative policies aimed at energy efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of mobility facilities and services.

In second place we find Oslo (Norway), followed by Canberra (Australia). Outside the podium is Copenhagen (Denmark), which climbs one position compared to previous years. Another Swiss city, Lausanne, pays the price, closing the top 5.

In our country, however, where are we? To find the first Italian city in the world ranking, you have to scroll down to 51st place, occupied by Bologna, which has lost three positions in the last two years. Negative trend also for Milan – from 69th to 82nd place – and Rome – 122nd, dropped eleven positions compared to 2021.

The results speak for themselves: Italy must catch up with other countries. And it can do so: Italian cities are already working to reverse the trend thanks to the approximately 17 billion allocated by the PNRR for the development of smart cities.

Urban regeneration and quality of living, ecological transition, road safety and digital services reserved for citizens are the points on which Italy is pushing to transform cities into smart urban centers.

Milan, for example, has installed 450 telephone booths of the future, real digital hubs that allow citizens to charge their smartphones, make payments, get tourist information, buy tickets and receive assistance in dangerous situations. Florence is testing the use of drones and electric vehicles with vertical take-off to transport goods, medicines and people. Cagliari, on the other hand, has invested in intelligent sensors for monitoring climate, CO levels2 or the crowding of the streets.
