Ahead of the Nerazzurri’s Champions League fixture against Red Star in match-week 2 of the Champions League tomorrow evening, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi previewed the fixture in the pre-match pres conference.

After having been dominated in the Milan derby in the Beneamata’s 2-1 defeat to the Rossonerri, Inter managed to bounce back with a 3-2 win over the weekend against Udinese, in which skipper Lautaro Martinez ended his poor run of form, bagging a superb brace to seal all three points on the road.

Nonetheless, it has been a quite underwhelming and troublesome start to the 2024/25 campaign for Inter. As it stands, the Biscione currently sit in fourth with 11 points, two points adrift from the league leaders Napoli.

Inter have struggled to replicate the fluidity and pace when in possession, the ruthlessness in the final third, and the defensive compactness of last season, causing them to have dropped points against minnows Genoa and Monza, as well has having been outclassed by Milan in the early stages of the season.

While speaking to the media, as relayed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Lazio boss emphasized that it has definitely been a sluggish start to the campaign:

“There is a contributory fault in both goals, we have analyzed everything and I am confident because the team is working to improve, commenced Simone Inzaghi.” “We must improve, we know, but it’s a team issue, not a single department. As it was last year, when scoring was very difficult. We continue to train and talk to each other, we want to do better.”

Winning is difficult but winning again is even more difficult. The boys are working hard, we’ve had some difficulties but we’re not the only ones: there have been six different league leaders in six days of the championship, there’s great balance. On Saturday we saw Inter again but we shouldn’t concede anything, if Udinese hadn’t had the two chances today we would be talking about something else.”

Furthermore, the Italian tactician provided his insight on the match-up against Red Star and spoke briefly about his line-up, confirming that former Napoli midifielder Piotr Zielinski will be involved from the very start of the vital fixture:

“Zielinski will definitely play, I’m evaluating the other two places: Calhanoglu or Asllani and Mkhitaryan or Frattesi. Lautaro? All four attackers will be able to play but I haven’t yet decided who will start, we’ll see in the final training sessions.

“Time will tell if this formula favours us. We have always got through the groups with a certain ease, this year we cannot make calculations. We need attention from the first matches and therefore tomorrow too. Red Star has nine matches of championship and the Champions League preliminaries, the team is well trained and has excellent elements. We will have to be good at managing the dangers.”
