Arsenal and Italy midfielder Jorginho has hailed Azzurri striker Mateo Retegui after the side’s 2-1 win over Venezuela in an international friendly yesterday.
Solomon Rondon had missed an early penalty for Venezuela, with Retegui scoring in the first half to give Italy a lead. Darwin Machin equalised some minutes later, but Retegui scored in the 80th minute to help his side pick up a win in the friendly.
Retegui is now establishing himself as a known goalscoring force in the Italy side and Jorginho spoke to the press (via TMW) after the win and he praised the Genoa man.
“He has important quality in front of goal, he sees the goal and is hungry for goals. He’s young, he has a lot to grow and he can do even better. It will only depend on him.”
This was Retegui’s first start under Luciano Spalletti and he did make a good impression. The striker’s role has been an issue for the Azzurri for a while now, with Ciro Immobile never having convinced in the role and Gianluca Scamacca yet to become a consistent figure in that position. So Retegui’s rise comes at the right time and it might only get better.
