A co-owner of La Bottega Nicastro said it was an “another exciting day in the ByWard Market” Tuesday after a driver crashed into his Italian grocery store.

Ottawa police and paramedics were called about a black SUV colliding with a building on George Street at 3:45 p.m.

Pat Nicastro said he is unsure of how it happened but the vehicle went over the curb, over a bike rack and hit a gas meter before damaging his front windows and patio furniture.

“The cashiers were very close [to the windows] and there were some customers at the front, so luckily no one was hurt,” he said.

The man driving it was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, according to paramedics. Another person was treated and released at the scene.

People were cleared from the store and parts of the street because of a gas leak from the damaged meter, according to Ottawa police. They didn’t mention any charges.

Nicastro said late Tuesday the store was boarded up so it could reopen Wednesday.
