On Sunday 15 September, a lively team of around 500 cyclists cycled through the most iconic streets of Porto Alegre, capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, to celebrate Italian Sport in the World Day.
The bike ride, called Giro Italia, was promoted by the Consulate General of Italy in Porto Alegre, in collaboration with PedAlegre. In addition to promoting sport and sustainability, the initiative, now in its fifth edition, celebrated the Day of Italian Sport in the World this year.
But in Porto Alegre, the programme also had another special meaning: to mark the symbolic recovery of the city after the May floods, passing through the streets of the historic centre that were the hardest hit. “It is a special day because we are celebrating, through one of the Italians’ favourite sports, the overcoming of this tragic period that we have all experienced in recent months,” said the Consul General of Italy in Porto Alegre, Valerio Caruso, who participated in the tour together with the community.
