Italian Open 2024: Iga Swiatek Clears the Air on Her Immediate Personal Act Post Thrashing Aryna Sabalenka to Script History

Polish WTA star Iga Swiatek did it again in Rome! Yesterday in a surprising turn of events, this world’s number-one seed defeated Aryna Sabalenka by 6-2 and 6-3 to bag her clay court victory. While her performance bedazzled her fans, they were more interested to know Swiatek’s dialed number post-victory. Swiatek, who keeps on surprising people with her on-court brilliance, showcases her bond with her father and sister interestingly.

Iga Swiatek pulled off a great victory over Belarusian WTA star Aryna Sabalenka in Rome yesterday. However, the media was surprised more when they spotted Swiatek video calling and talking to someone right after she bagged her Italian Open title. Post-victory, Swiatek was asked by an intrigued reporter in the press conference- “After the win you had a video call with someone on the court. Can you tell us with who was it?” While the majority was expecting this world’s number-one tennis player to finally reveal her romantic life, her response cleared the air.

My dad and my sister. I’m really in the bubble during the tournament, so I sometimes even not talk to anybody for a longer time. I wanted to call them because without my dad I wouldn’t be here. He’s the reason I play tennis. I felt like it’s a good idea (smiling)”- said Swiatek.

Fans might not know but Swiatek’s father Tomasz Swiatek was an international rower, who represented Poland in international competitions. His performance at the 1988 Summer Olympic Games brought Poland victory in the B final of men’s quadruple sculls. In 1987, Swiatek’s father won a gold medal at the Universiade in Zagreb in quadruple sculls as well. Swiatek’s father encouraged this Polish tennis star to take up sports when she was small. This incredible father-daughter bonding helped Swiatek to win her season’s 10th WTA 1000 title.

On the other hand, Swiatek has an elder sister named Agata Swiatek, who was a swimmer before switching to tennis. From the family statistics, it feels that Iga Swiatek hardly had a chance to not take up sports given her father and sister’s deeply invested interest.

Despite being a gifted player, Swiatek’s journey to fame wasn’t an easy road. “I always had dreams, but realizing them was not so easy. It has long been known that Iga has a gift for playing. However, there were obstacles along the way, including an injury in 2017. Then everything was hanging in the balance,” Swiatek’s father told in an interview, in the Eye to Eye series.

Tomasz Swiatek also spoke about their financial struggles. They endured such a financial crisis that Swiatek almost had to pause her training sessions because of money. “There was a moment when I was against the wall financially. When I explained to Iga that there might come a time when we would have to stop training, I was convinced to try again, There was a moment when I earned enough money to earn my bread and butter, but there was nothing extra, thanks to which I could afford additional financing,”- said Swiatek’s father.
