Luciano Spalletti’s Italy are out of EURO 2024 after the loss to Switzerland but reports state that the Azzurri squad wasn’t quite united under the Italian.
Italy won only one game in the entire tournament and the last game saw them put in a diabolical show, as Switzerland dominated. La Repubblica (via CM) state today that all wasn’t right for Italy behind the scenes too, as a part of the squad felt distanced from the manager and his ideas about the game.
There was also a lack of commitment in training from multiple players, who were left confused by the tactics and the training methods in place. Spalletti found himself without a leader and that was a problem for him as small groups and factions were formed inside the dressing room.
Some players accused Spalletti of a lack of preparation and believed that there was no intensity in the style of play. Some players were also privately unhappy with the call-up of Nicolo Fagioli, who was seen as a ‘snitch’ for having exposed Sandro Tonali as part of the betting issue.
Some players were shocked by the tactical changes made two hours before the Croatia game. A couple of players felt excluded from the eleven.
