Speaking in an interview with Tuttosport via TMW, Italy footballing legend Dino Zoff recollected his memories of lifting the World Cup in 1982 with the nation despite criticism. He praised the current squad’s performances, especially goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has single-handedly kept the Azzurri in the tournament with his top-class saves. Zoff remarked: “The goalkeeper is always important, he is doing very well, so far his contribution has been notable.”
Zoff became the oldest ever player in the history of the World Cup to clinch the title at the age of 40 years, 4 months and 13 days.
Italy go up against Switzerland in the opening game of the Euros’ Round of 16 this evening at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Responsibility increases for Donnarumma now as he will not only have to execute world-class saves throughout the 90 minutes but will have to be ready for a strong showing should the matches goes to penalties.
