Serie A giants Roma lost 1-0 to Swedish side Elfsborg in the Europa League and they are winless in the Europa League, as a result.

The Giallorossi were pretty ordinary in the first half and Elfsborg should have scored a goal even before they actually did, but they missed their opportunities to go in front. A Tommaso Baldanzi handball in the 44th minute led to Michael Baidoo slotting home a penalty and handing Elfsborg a deserved lead.

Roma didn’t really create too many clear opportunities to score and because of their failure to beat Athletic Bilbao in the previous game, they have just one point in the Europa League so far.

Roma boss Ivan Juric spoke to the press about the result but he was encouraged, saying: “There are many positive things, the team moved the ball well. I saw many chances, a lot of play. We definitely need to improve on the counterattacks, we weren’t able to score and we accept that, but I didn’t see a negative performance or confusion.”

When asked about Roma’s structural issues, Juric said: “It’s useless to think beyond that, I have a quality squad and I have to bring out the best. They are satisfied with many things, others need to be improved. Now we need to focus on the matches, on Monza.

“For me today, in terms of play we made impressive steps forward. We lacked in the details, but thinking about what is missing in the squad is counterproductive.”

It is clear that Juric is very laser focused on making the most of what he has instead of what he doesn’t and how the issues can be fixed. But the current backline might demand some restructuring, as the weeks go by.
